<p><strong>Methods:</strong> Eight syringes were analysed: from the USA, Terumo 0.5 mL, Becton-Dickinson (BD) Tuberculin 1 mL, BD Luer-lok 1 mL, BD Ultra-Fine 0.3 mL and Exel Insulin 0.3 mL; from Germany, Braun Omnifx-F 1 mL and Braun Injekt-F 1 mL and from Spain, BD Plastipak 1 mL.<br />
Theimpact of air, priming the plunger, agitation by ﬂicking and ﬂuid temperature on SO release were assessed by light microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed to identify the molecular compound in each syringe.</p>
<p><strong>Results:</strong> Five hundred and sixty syringes were analysed.<br />
Terumo 0.5 mL and BD Ultra-Fine 0.3 mL released more SO than all others. BD Luer-lok 1 mL, BD Plastipak and Braun Omnifx-F 1 mL released little SO; BD Tuberculin 1 mL, Exel 0.3 mL and Braun Injekt-F 1 mL released the least SO. Priming the syringe and different temperatures did not signifcantly affect SO release. Agitation by ﬂicking caused a signifcantly higher proportion of samples to have SO droplets and an increased number of oil droplets. Air had an additive effect on the release of oil in the agitation groups. FTIR identifed polysiloxane in all syringes but Injekt-F.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Syringes commonly used for intravitreal injections frequently release SO droplets, especially when agitated by ﬂicking. To avoid unnecessary ocular risks, syringes should not be agitated before intravitreal injection. It is desirable that syringes be manufactured specifcally for ophthalmic use.</p>

<p><strong>Study Design:</strong> Quasi experimental study.</p>
<p><strong>Place and Duration of Study:</strong> Department of Ophthalmology, Lahore General Hospital Lahore, Pakistan during 2012.</p>
<p><strong>Patients and Methods: </strong> Viscosities of silicone oils of 1000 cs and 5000 cs, manufactured by multinational/national manufacturers  in  Pakistan,  were  compared.  Oils  of  1000 cs/5000 cs  were  placed  in  20  ml  syringes,  marked randomly and placed in water-VVbaths at 250C, to standardize the control environment. Each syringe was then attached to 23G millennium vitrectomy system and time taken to empty 9 ml of oils at pressures of 40 mmHg and 70 mmHg was noted.</p>
<p><strong>Results:</strong> Oils of same centistokes manufactured by different manufacturers behaved differently in terms of their flowability and rates of emptying. The emptying times for 1000 cs oils ranged from 112.1 seconds to 144.4 seconds at 40 mmHg and 60.2 to 70.3 seconds at 70 mmHg, whereas corresponding figures for 5000 cs were between 335.7 seconds  and  802.0  seconds  at  40  mmHg  and  between  16 9.6  seconds  and  348.7  seconds  at  70  mmHg.  The differences at all levels were statistically significant (p&lt; 0.001).</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Silicone  oils  of  similar  centistokes  behaved  differently  in  terms  of  their  rates  of  flow  through  a standard 23G vitrectomy system under standard conditions indicating better standardization of the viscosity of silicone oils available in the market.</p>

<p><strong>Materials and Methods:</strong> The antimicrobial activity of conventional silicone oil (RS OIL 5000) and heavy silicone oil (heavySil 1500) was tested. The antinicrobial effects of both silicone oils were determined by the growing capability of the microorganism.</p>
<p><strong>Results:</strong> The number of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans decreased to zero level at the second day of inoculation in heavy silicone oil. In conventional silicone oil, the microorganisms survived longer than in heavy silicone oil.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Heavy silicone oil seems to be more effective than conventional silicone oil against endophthalmitis-causing agents.</p>

<p>The follow-up visits were scheduled 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after surgery. The main outcome measures were visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), PVR reproliferation, and electrophysiological parameters.</p>
<p>The primary success rate was 80% (24/30). Fourteen patients (46.7%) had a postoperative improvement in visual acuity, 12 patients (40.0%) maintained their preoperative visual acuity, and four patients (13.3%) experienced a reduction in visual acuity. In conclusion, our experience with double filling in selected cases of retinal detachment was positive.</p>
<p>No electroretinographic signs of retinal toxicity and a low incidence of PVR reproliferation were observed.</p>
